Tottenham Hotspur enter 2026/27 under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who arrived in March 2026. He kept the club up on the final day of a turbulent season that saw three different managers in charge.

The club backed De Zerbi with more than £237 million in summer spending, headlined by a club-record £100 million move for Sandro Tonali. Former captain Cristian Romero departed for Atlético Madrid, the first season since 2020-21 without him. Founded in 1882, Spurs have won two English top-flight titles and one UEFA Europa League.

Tottenham Hotspur Team History

Tottenham Hotspur was founded in 1882 and has played home matches in the same part of north London ever since. The club moved into the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2019. Spurs won the English top flight and FA Cup double in 1960-61, the first club to achieve that feat in the 20th century.

Spurs became the first British club to win a European trophy, lifting the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963. Two UEFA Cups followed in 1972 and 1984, and the club added a fourth European trophy by winning the UEFA Europa League in 2024-25.

The 2025-26 season proved turbulent. Thomas Frank was sacked in February after a run of results left Tottenham close to relegation. Interim boss Igor Tudor lasted only 44 days before Roberto De Zerbi was appointed in March. De Zerbi kept the club up on the final day of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur Transfers 2026/27

Spurs backed Roberto De Zerbi with one of the biggest summer rebuilds in the Premier League. The club spent more than £237 million as it looked to move on from a difficult season.

In:

  • Sandro Tonali – from Newcastle United, club-record fee of £100 million
  • Mateus Fernandes – reported £85 million
  • Xavi Simons and Conor Gallagher – further additions to the midfield
  • Marcos Senesi – free transfer, formerly of Bournemouth
  • Jan Paul van Hecke – from Brighton & Hove Albion
  • Andy Robertson – free transfer, formerly of Liverpool

Out:

  • Cristian Romero – to Atlético Madrid
  • Guglielmo Vicario – departed the club

Tonali’s arrival from Newcastle carries an obvious subplot, since Spurs host Newcastle in only their second match of the season.
